SACA Brier Scholarship Fund

Introduction:

The Southern Alberta Curling Association (SACA) Scholarship Fund was established with the proceeds from the very successful 2009 Brier held in Calgary.   The scholarships are intended to financially assist junior curlers who are primarily attending post secondary schools.  While consideration will be given to competitive curlers, students who curl recreationally but help in other ways to better the sport of curling will also be given equal consideration.  We look forward to receiving your applications.

Criteria:

Applicant must be a resident of Alberta, attending high school (with proof of acceptance into a post secondary institute) or a post secondary school and curling within Southern Alberta (SACA boundaries), or is a resident of Southern Alberta (SACA)  but attending a post secondary institution at a location outside of SACA.

Applicant must be 21 years of age or under as of December 31st in the year prior to the application deadline.

Attendance or acceptance in a recognized post-secondary institution required.

Applicant must have previously competed or is currently competing in competitive events (Playdowns, Winter Games), or participate in an organized curling league.

Applicant must have demonstrated a willingness to ‘give back to the sport’ (instructing, coaching, officiating, volunteering), and possess above average interest and dedication in the promotion of curling.

Must be a member in good standing with a curling club affiliated within SACA (this criterion may be waived by the review committee for students attending schools outside of SACA boundaries).

Scholarship Award:

The scholarships will be awarded to three recipients annually:  one male, one female, and a third from the remaining applicants.

Each successful recipient will be awarded a scholarship in the amount of $5,000 (two payments of $2,500 each issued in September and February).

Successful applicants will not be allowed to apply again.

Applications:

Deadline for applications is June 15th annually, until the fund is exhausted.

Proof of enrollment and/or academic standing/performance must accompany the application.  Full course load is a mandatory requirement and high standard of academic excellence is expected.

Proof of curling club affiliation must be provided.

Applicant must provide a short essay detailing such items as: why they think the scholarship should be awarded to them, the education they are pursuing, their future goals, projected use of the funds, and any impact they’ve made in their life.

Applicants will provide two letters of reference.

The applications will be reviewed and selections made by the SACA Board of Directors.

Please contact the SACA office for further information regarding the scholarship.

The Glenn Watson Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded annually to one Junior curler, either male or female, in the amount of $1,250.  This scholarship is offered in memory of Glenn who accidentally passed away while vacationing during the summer of 2007.  Glenn Watson was a Board of Director for SACA, a respected Official, a competitive player and always available to lend a helping hand in any aspect of promoting curling and encouraging new members to our sport.  As a humble man, Glenn would be proud to have a perpetual legacy offered in his name in support of Junior curlers.
